Diasingkan sejak kecil, Jinta dan Suzune menemukan keluarga baru di desa Kadono. Mereka diasuh oleh Motoharu, penjaga desa yang bijak, dan putrinya, Shirayuki. Desa itu dikendalikan oleh Itsukihime, seorang gadis kuil yang tak tersentuh. Hanya segelintir orang yang beruntung bisa bertemu dengannya. Namun, dunia mereka berubah saat Itsukihime mangkat. Shirayuki diangkat menjadi penerus takhta. Bertekad untuk tetap berada di dekat Shirayuki, Jinta bekerja tanpa lelah dan akhirnya terpilih sebagai penjaga desa berikutnya. Sebagai pelindung, Jinta ditugaskan untuk membasmi segala marabahaya. Suatu hari, ia berhadapan dengan iblis di hutan. Di tengah pertarungan sengit, iblis itu meramalkan kehancuran yang akan datang dan menempelkan lengannya yang terputus ke Jinta, mengutuknya menjadi iblis abadi. Ketika Jinta tersadar, Kadono telah rata dengan tanah. Suzune, yang telah berubah menjadi iblis seperti yang diramalkan, telah membunuh Shirayuki dalam sebuah insiden tragis, lalu melarikan diri. Diliputi amarah dan duka, Jinta memulai pengejaran tanpa henti. Selama berabad-abad, ia menjelajahi Jepang, melindungi manusia dari serangan iblis ganas. Di tengah kesunyian perjalanannya, ia merenungi pertanyaan paling penting: apa yang harus ia lakukan saat waktu membawanya kembali kepada Suzune, teman masa kecil yang telah merenggut segalanya darinya.
